Are You Worried that Antibiotics Aren’t Enough?

Many people do or have suffered from painful ingrown toenails. Still more have had painful toenail conditions that are erroneously diagnosed as ingrown. A true ingrown toenail occurs when a portion or fragment of the nail has broken the skin and is sticking into the flesh of the toe. In this case there is now a hole through which bacteria can enter the toe and create infection. There is pain, swelling, redness and sometimes bleeding or pus.

Most people will head to their family doctor for treatment and quite rightly get a prescription for an antibiotic to treat the infection. The only problem is, the medication treats the symptoms but not the cause of the pain. If the nail has truly broken the skin, there remains a hole through which bacteria can still enter your toe. Even if you have antibiotics, they won’t cure the ingrown toenail. In fact, you may get reinfected once you have finished your antibiotics!

So what’s the answer? See someone who is educated, trained and skilled at dealing with ingrown toenails. It is not good enough to cut out the piece that is causing the pain – after all, it’s not just what you cut out, but also what you leave behind! The remaining nail must be shaped in a way to prevent the nail from growing in again and all of this must be done in a way that is a comfortable as possible for you.

At times the nail must be monitored as it grows out to keep you comfortable and prevent the problem from recurring. So who can help you? Trust your feet to the professionals. Chiropodists treat diseases, disorders and dysfunctions of the foot
